Psychotherapy
“We must ask of every dilemma, every setback, every sadness: ‘What does this ask of me? What does it mean for my journey?’ Such questions honor the reality of suffering while also asking how it may serve our individuation.”
Swamplands of the Soul: New Life in Dismal Places
James Hollis
Change, anticipated or unforeseen, desired or dreaded, may cause a range of uncomfortable feelings, and even symptoms of anxiety and depression. At some stage in life, we all come up against some kind of change, which may feel like a struggle or crisis. This is when therapy can really make a difference to how you move through your discomfort, suffering or stuck-ness. My approach is compassionate and collaborative. I am specifically interested in working with adults, couples or families going through a particular transition in life or a period of personal growth. Such transitions may be precipitated by changes in a relationship like marriage, breakups, infidelity, parenthood, or other stressors like, illness, loss, relocation, or work-related changes or stressors. Everybody has a unique life story, and I welcome the opportunity to explore each person’s specific reason for seeking therapy. Over the years, I have developed a special interest in some of the changes that life presents and therefore I have included a little more detail on these areas below.
Professional Wellbeing & Development
I work with people contemplating or navigating an academic or an academic or professional pivot, at any stage of their career. I am able to help you to conceptualise and define what you’re seeking professionally, and support you in working through feelings that may be keeping you stuck. If you are approaching retirement, I can also support you in dealing with this ending.
If you’re struggling with burnout or work-place dynamics, I help you develop self-awareness, adaptability and strategic thinking, so you can navigate interpersonal conflicts and professional challenges with confidence and clarity.
Navigating Separation & Divorce
Divorce is one of life’s most challenging transitions, bringing emotional upheaval, practical complexities, and significant life changes. Whether you are contemplating separation, in the midst of the legal process, or adjusting to life after divorce, I can provide guidance and support to help you navigate the following:
- Processing the emotions of separation: grief, anger, guilt, sadness, or uncertainty.
- Working through trauma related to the relationship or divorce.
- Developing emotional resilience and self-care practices.
- Handling conflict and difficult conversations with a co-parent or ex-partner.
- Supporting children emotionally while maintaining your own well-being.
- Creating a roadmap for the divorce process; what to expect legally and psychologically.
- Co-parenting effectively and fostering a stable, secure environment for children.
- Creating a different life and moving forward with purpose.
Spiritual, Religious & Existential Concerns
One’s personal philosophies of faith, belief, and purpose are complex and dynamic. Whether you are experiencing a crisis of faith, religious trauma or ambivalence, or grappling with existential anxieties, I will support you in examining and exploring your internal questions or dilemmas with openness, non-judgement and respect.
Midlife & Related Concerns
Midlife is often an invitation to reflect on one’s life more deeply. I work with women and men who are interested in examining their lives, gaining new perspectives, challenging belief systems, and seeing this stage as an opportunity for re/self-discovery, transformation, healing wounds and integrating life’s experiences.
